Salzgitter to Decide on DRI Plant Next Year
09/15/2020 - Salzgitter expects to report whether construction of direct reduction of iron ore (DRI) plant and upstream hydrogen electrolyzer is feasible by next spring, the company said Tuesday.
“Expert teams from the cooperation partners will now set about investigating technical, commercial, and logistics issues and exchange their views in weekly conferences,” the company said in a statement. “If the findings of the feasibility study are successful, the joint implementation of the project has been planned as the next step.”
The project lies at the heart of its Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking (SALCOS) initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions from the steelmaking process by 95%.
Salzgitter said it hopes to produce 2 million metric tons of directly reduced iron annually. The output would be converted to steel trip at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH’s integrated steel works.
