Salzgitter Signs Contract for EAF

According to the companies, the AC furnace will have a capacity of 1.9 million metric tons. In addition to the furnace, Primetals Technologies also will provide ancillary equipment such as dust extraction, heat recovery, water management, electrical compensation to stabilize the network and material handling.

“Extensive digitization, robotics and other technology packages will be employed to ensure process stability at the new EAF,” Primetals Technologies said.

Production is slated to start at the end of 2025.

The contract is a significant step forward in Salzgitter’s low-CO2 steelmaking project, called SALCOS. Through the project, the company will convert its integrated steel works entirely to low-CO2 crude steel production. The project envisions construction of two direct reduction plants and three electric arc furnaces to replace blast furnaces and converters.

“This step underscores our ambition through SALCOS® to retain our leadership in decarbonizing the steel industry and ensure that our plant here in Salzgitter is securely positioned for a long-term future,” said Ulrich Grethe, head of steel production at Salzgitter AG.
