Salzgitter Secures Supply of Solar-Generated Electricity
08/06/2024 - Salzgitter Group has signed a long-term green power purchase agreement that will provide for up to 64 gigawatt hours annually, the steelmaker said Tuesday.
Under the seven-year agreement with RWE Supply & Trading, Salzgitter will receive electricity from a 180-MW solar farm in Brandenburg, Germany. Covering 170 hectares, the solar farm is one of the largest such systems in Germany.
The agreement will support Salzgitter’s low-CO2 steelmaking program, SALCOS, under which the company is gradually converting its steel production to electricity and hydrogen-based processes from 2026.
The aim is to achieve almost completely CO2-free production from 2033, replacing the traditional blast furnace route with production processes using direct reduction and electric arc furnaces, Salzgitter said.
