Salzgitter Announces Completion of Blast Furnace Reline
01/03/2024 - Germany’s Salzgitter has restarted its blast furnace following a 100-day reline and overhaul of the unit, the company has said.
A EUR100 million project, the reline represents a key step toward securing a pig iron supply within the context of the company’s incremental low-CO2 steel production transformation, Salzgitter said.
"This relining provides us and our customers and partners the security we need to continue to consistently drive the transformation of steel production forward. Based on a secure basic supply of pig iron, we will complete the next steps of SALCOS, Salzgitter Low-CO2 Steelmaking,” said Ulrich Grethe, Salzgitter Flachstahl management board chairman.
The A furnace was originally commissioned in 1977 and has been relined several times since. It has an annual capacity of around 2 million metric tons of pig iron, Salzgitter said.
