SAIL to Set Up Steel Processing Unit at Lakhimpur Kheri

SAIL announced plans to set up an additional Steel Processing Unit (SPU) at Village Behjam, in the District Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh.
 
The unit will produce 100,000 tonnes of TMT bars per year in various sizes as per local customer requirements. SAIL has acquired land for the unit at the village Behjam, and is estimating the total cost for the project at around Rs. 100 crores.
 
The company said it is setting up the new steel processing unit with a view to make steel available to consumers in rural areas and thus directly serve a large number of small consumers. Development of the new facility will help in the overall growth and development of the region, including the provision of direct and indirect employment to a number of people. The project is to be completed within approximately one and half years’ time, with project activity to start shortly.
 
SAIL is currently setting up steel processing units in a number of states where it does not have any integrated steel production facility. The new units will help to the company meet local market demand for tailor-made steel products and thereby help increase per-capita steel consumption in rural areas.
 
The new steel processing units will use billets produced by SAIL's main integrated steel plants, converting them for the manufacture of a wide variety of steel items that can be utilized by the common user, for construction of buildings and various structural works.
