SAIL Targets Expansion in 2023–2024

SAIL expects to finalize the next phase of the expansion plan, which will more than double its production capacity to 50 million metric tons per year (mtpy), in the next 15–18 months, its top management said in a recent investor call. The work on the expansion is likely to start in 2023–2024.

According to Financial Express, in the next round of modernization and expansion, SAIL will look to expand capacity by 12–14 mtpy in the first phase at its units in Bokaro, Burnpur (IISCO) and Rourkela. Though there hasn’t been any plan to raise capacity at Bhilai Steel Plant in the first phase, its capacity will be raised to 12 mtpy in the second phase.

SAIL’s expansion plan is in line with the Indian government’s National Steel Policy, which aims to create an installed capacity of 300 mtpy in the country by 2030–2031.
