SAIL Starts up Danieli Bloom Caster at Durgapur Plant

SAIL recently started up its new 4-strand bloom caster at the Durgapur Steel Plant in India.

The state-of-the-art, 9-meter radius conticaster was supplied and installed by Danieli Centro Met on a turnkey basis. It is designed to produce 160- x 210/230-mm, 200- x 200-mm and 150- x 300/350-mm sections in lengths 3.4 to 10.0 meters.

The caster features state-of-the-art technologies in high-speed continuous casting of quality blooms and mini-slabs, including hydraulic oscillating tables, multi-taper copper tube moulds, low-emission-type radioactive mould level control, and advanced air mist-type cooling. Danieli Centro Met will also supply a level 2 process control and automation system.

The new caster has a nominal rated production capacity of 750,000 tonnes of cast blooms per year, with the potential to reach 900,000 tonnes per year in the future. Product grades include low, medium carbon and low alloy steels.
