SAIL Commissions State-of-the-Art Hot Strip Mill
02/05/2020 - The Steel Authority of India Ltd.’s Rourkela works recently commissioned a new, 3-million-metric-ton hot strip mill, according to project contractor Larsen & Toubro.
According to the engineering and construction firm, the strip mill, one of the largest of its kind in India, can produce coils in thicknesses between 1.2 mm and 25.4 mm and in widths between 725 mm and 2,150 mm. It also can roll up coils in weights of up to 35 metric tons.
It will produce carbon structural grades; high-strength, low-alloy grades, high carbon grades, LPG cylinder steels, low-alloy steels, API grades and automotive grades.
The firm said the mill, which utilizes Primetals Technologies process equipment, produced its first coil within two days of the start of hot trials.
“The world-class (hot-rolled) coils produced from this mill will give SAIL’s market share a huge boost,” the firm said.
“With this remarkable achievement, we have once again proved our mettle to execute large scale EPC projects across metallurgical units,” it added.
