SAIL Celebrates Start of Construction for Kangra Processing Unit
02/23/2009 - Steel Authority of India Limited celebrates the start of construction for its ninth steel processing unit, which will be located at Kandrori in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) celebrated the start of construction for its ninth steel processing unit, which will be located at Kandrori in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
The new Kangra unit will have an installed capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year of TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars ranging in diameter from 8 to 25 mm from billets sourced from SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant. It will have a TMT bar mill capable of producing 60,000 tonnes of 8 to 12 mm diameter TMT bars and 40,000 tonnes of 16 to 25 mm diameter TMT bars per year. SAIL is estimating the total cost for the project at around Rs 79 crore
SAIL’s ninth steel processing unit’s foundation stone was laid by Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Steel Shri Ram Vilas Paswan. The ceremony was also attended by State Chief Minister Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Honorable MP (Kangra) Shri Chander Kumar, State Transport Minister Shri Kishan Kapoor, Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Shri Ramesh Dhawala, MLAs Dr. Rajen Sushant and Shri Deshraj, SAIL Chairman Shri S.K. Roongta, Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor (MoS) Shri B.S. Meena, and Managing Director Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) Shri V. Shyamsundar, as well as senior officials of the union and state government.
Speaking on the occasion, the Steel Minister thanked the SAIL management for commencing the activities of Kangra steel processing unit within a very short span of time. He said steel processing units will help consumption of steel to increase and make good quality steel accessible to the common man, noting that SAIL’s decision to set up the units was in tandem with the National Steel Policy’s goal of increasing per capita steel consumption in rural areas from the present 2 kg to 4 kg by 2019-20. He urged SAIL Management to ensure that the project is completed before schedule.
The company’s construction of this facility supports its ongoing strategy to meet market demand for tailor-made steel products while helping to increase per-capita steel consumption. The company is planning to set up 11 steel processing units in 7 states where it does not have any production facility. To date, foundation stones have been laid for new units at Betiah, Mahnar and Gaya in Bihar; Gwalior, Ujjain and Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh and Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir. SAIL’s steel processing units will use products such as hot rolled coils, billets and TMT bars produced by the company's main integrated steel plants to manufacture a wide variety of steel items.
SAIL's Ranchi-based Centre for Engineering & Technology will be the project consultant for the project, which is expected to be completed in 18 months.
