Saarstahl Prepares to Move Ahead on DRI, EAF Conversion
12/05/2022 - Saarstahl AG leaders are greenlighting a EUR3.5 billion plan to build two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and a direct reduction plant at sites in Germany, the company has said.
Under the plan, an EAF will be installed at the Völklingen site and an EAF and a DRI plant will be built at the Dillinger plant site.
“The decision of the supervisory boards demonstrates that we have developed the right strategies and measures to ensure the future viability of our companies. Dillinger and Saarstahl customers are also highly interested in green steel. The task now is to implement this within an ambitious timeframe,” said Karl-Ulrich Köhler, management board chairman of SHS and chief executive of Dillinger and Saarstahl.
The goal is to start production in 2027; however, the project is contingent on the approval of public funding.
“We are ready and have strong support at our side from the Saarland state government. Now it's up to the political decision-makers in Brussels and Berlin to implement functioning framework conditions for the transformation to green steel in a timely manner and to approve the applications for the necessary funding,” Köhler said.
