Ruukki to Supply HS Steel Structures for Ore Wagons at Pajala Mine

Ruukki has signed a contract with the Swedish company Kiruna Wagon to deliver high-strength shell plates for iron ore wagons to be used at the iron ore mine in Pajala, northern Sweden.

Kiruna Wagon has been commissioned to make the wagons by Northland Resources. The iron ore mine at Pajala will open in late 2012, and the new wagons will transport iron ore concentrate to the ice-free harbor in Narvik, Norway. Under this contract, Ruukki will deliver high-strength shell plates made of Ruukki Optim steel for 75 wagon units, with each unit consisting of two wagons.

Ruukki's delivery consists of shell plates, laser welded, cut and bent for the cargo space of the wagon units. The shell plates will be prefabricated at Ruukki's steel service centers in Seinäjoki and Uusikaupunki, Finland.

"This contract is an important new entry for us [into the Swedish mining sector]. Ruukki's strengths are high-strength special steels and a diverse capability to deliver components," said Vice President Johan Magnusson at Ruukki.

"Ruukki's ability to deliver large laser-welded plates reduces the workload and improves product quality whilst also boosting cost-efficiency. After a testing period of almost a year, it's now nice to get down to working together in earnest," said Company Manager Fredrik Kangas at Kiruna Wagon.

Ruukki provides its customers with energy-efficient steel solutions for better living, working, and moving. The company operates in about 30 countries and employs around 11,800 people. Net sales in 2011 totaled EUR 2.8 billion.
