Ruukki to Provide Structures for Bridge over Kyrönsalmi Strait

Ruukki has signed a contract to deliver and install the steel structures for a bridge over the Kyrönsalmi strait in Savonlinna, Finland, as part of the Highway 14 development project. Ruukki's customer in the project is YIT Construction Ltd.

The new bridge will be more than 400 meters long and consist of a steel composite girder bridge and a bascule bridge to allow clearance for shipping.

Ruukki claims that the high degree of prefabrication of its structures along with carefully planned site operations will enable prompt delivery and help to ensure that the entire bridge is completed on time.

Ruukki plans to start manufacturing the structures for the Kyrönsalmi bridge later this year. The bridge is expected to open to traffic in summer 2011.

"The huge bridge girders will be delivered to the site from our plant in Ylivieska, Finland. The girders will be joined together to form large sections ready for installation. These sections will be put into place to form the load-bearing steel structure of the bridge," explained Sami Eronen, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure and Northern Europe, Ruukki Construction.

Ruukki's earlier bridge construction projects in Finland include the Isohaara bridge on Highway 4 spanning the Kemijoki river and the Mälkiä canal bridge on Highway 6 in Lappeenranta.
