Ruukki to Deliver Steel Structures for New Office, Retail Premises in Helsinki

Ruukki is to deliver steel structures worth more than EUR 3 million for a new six-story, 26,400-square-metre property for Tapiola Mutual Pension Insurance Co. The new building will be situated in the Helsinki district of Jätkäsaari and will take over a year to complete.

Ruukki's delivery comprises design, manufacture and installation, with fire protection, of the steel frame. Rakennusosakeyhtiö Hartela is the contract’s turnkey contractor. The building’s main tenant will be electronics retailer Verkkokauppa.com.

“The scope of the construction project makes the timetable challenging,” said Project Manager Hannu Räikkönen from Hartela. “We needed a partner capable of delivery reliability. We have long worked together with Ruukki and so it was our natural choice of partner to deliver the steel structures.”

“The high degree of prefabrication of the frame structures, accurate deliveries and close cooperation with the customer ensure we will keep to schedule," said Sami Eronen, SVP, Building Projects, Ruukki Construction.

"The cramped construction site poses its own challenges. The steel frame will be erected using tower cranes already working at the site," added Project Manager Juhani Vainionpää.

Steel pillars and other structures will be made at Ruukki's works in Peräseinäjoki, Finland, and the frame beams will be delivered from Ruukki's works in Ylivieska, Finland, and in Balabanovo, Russia. Installation will continue through June.

The property is scheduled to be handed over in three stages. The garage in the basement and the retail premises on the lower stories will be completed in November 2011, while the storage floors will be transferred in December 2011 and the office premises on the top floor in January 2012.
