Ruukki Special Steels Used for Train Coach Panels

Ruukki and French company Alstom Transport have developed a new high-strength steel solution for the assembly of wall panels for regional train coaches. The first panels were delivered to France in October.

The wall panels for the train coaches are made of Ruukki’s high-strength, hot-rolled Optim special steels that are laser welded and cut into components ready for installation. Optim special steels have enabled the thickness of the wall panels to be reduced, according to Ruukki, with a coach side panel weighing less than 500 kilos.

Alstom Transport and Ruukki started work together at the train design stage. The components are made at Ruukki’s service center in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

To ensure the safety and traceability of coach components, Ruukki’s service center in Uusikaupunki has obtained EN 15085-2 certification awarded by Det Norske Veritas.

“For Ruukki, this is a new application for special steels and the manufacturing method used in this case can be utilized in a number of special steel applications,” said Kari Lehtinen, Senior Vice President, Sales, Ruukki Metals.

Rautaruukki, which uses the marketing name Ruukki, supplies metal-based components, systems, and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries.
