Ruukki is responsible for the fabrication and installation of the load-bearing steel structures for the new Pekkala Bridge to be built in Joensuu, Finland, and for delivery of the large piles used for the foundations of the bridge. Ruukki will deliver the bridge sections ready-to-install at the construction site.
The bridge is part of a project to improve the Joensuu ring road, the busiest traffic route in North Karelia. Ruukki is also supplying the pipe piles for a total of 10 underpasses and overpasses for the project. The deliveries are worth a total of about EUR 2.5 million.
The foundation piles will be made at Ruukki's Oulainen unit in Finland; deliveries are scheduled to begin in April. Fabrication of the load-bearing steel structures is to begin in summer 2010 at the Ylivieska unit, and installation is expected to start in fall 2010. The new Pekkala Bridge will open to traffic in 2012.
"Ruukki's diverse expertise covers the entire supply chain from the manufacture of steel products and fabrication of structures right up to installation. This makes it easier for such an extensive project to progress smoothly and cost-efficiently to schedule," said Project Manager Timo Tiainen from TYL Joensuun Kehätie, the consortium that is Ruukki's customer and main contractor for the project.
The new bridge will be 450 meters long and is being built for another roadway next to the existing Pekkala Bridge spanning the Pielisjoki River for three lanes total.
Net sales from Ruukki's infrastructure construction were up by 45% for the first quarter of 2010 compared to 2009. During late 2009, the company agreed on deliveries for 15 bridges in different countries.
Rautaruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries, including a wide selection of metal products and services.
