Russula to Upgrade Special Metals Co. Rolling Mill
05/21/2013 - Russula has been selected by Special Metals Company, a PCC company, to upgrade the automation system and drives for its Huntington, W.Va., wire mill.
Russula is pleased to announce it has been selected by Special Metals Company, a PCC company, to upgrade the automation system and drives for its Huntington WV wire mill. The new equipment will replace an aging drive and control system for which spare parts and service are becoming difficult to obtain.
The mill is a Morgardshammar Contiloop Mill with a Kocks Block, 15 mill stands, 14 horizontal loopers and 6 shears. The final product exits to either 2 pouring coilers or 2 laying reels. The mill is designed to produce highly engineered nickel and cobalt alloy and other special wire for welding and aerospace high-temperature, high-corrosion resistance applications.
The new Russula Mill Control System includes cascade speed control, low tension and loop control and shear control. The HMI-based recipe storage system will assist the operator, especially during product changeovers. The existing 16 mill stand drives will be replaced with new digital drives and the 16 auxiliary drives will be modernized with new digital armature and field modules mounted inside the existing cabinets. All new remote I/O will be supplied to minimize wiring. Russula will also supply a high speed data acquisition system for faster troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
The Russula Mill Control is constructed using a selection of hardware chosen specifically for this project, including Rockwell ControlLogix PLC’s and remote I/O, ABB DCS800 drives, Wonderware HMI, Delta loop scanners and IBA HSDAS.
Russula is responsible for installation supervision, commissioning and operator/maintenance training.
Delivery and installation are scheduled for early 2014.
