Russula to Upgrade Automation System for Nucor Steel Nebraska
03/31/2014 - Russula has been selected by Nucor Steel Nebraska to upgrade the automation system and drives for the rod block and laying head in the NN1 rolling mill.
The new equipment will improve productivity by reducing downtime due to aging electronics, faster processor speed and advanced user-friendly diagnostics.
As an independent engineering company, Russula is free to select the best equipment for the application. For this project, Russula has chosen ControlLogix PLC’s and ABB DCS800 digital DC drives. There are 3 drives for the rod block that will be operated as master/follower/follower with the possibility to operate at reduced capacity in case of a single motor failure. Russula will also supply the integration to the existing Automax control that will be replaced at a later date.
Russula is responsible for installation supervision, commissioning and operator/maintenance training.
This is the first project Russula has been awarded in the Nebraska plant although it has completed major projects in many other Nucor plants, most recently a full mill upgrade in Jewett, Texas.
