Rio Tinto Awards Metso Engineering Contract for Low-Carbon Ironmaking Plant
08/09/2023 - Global mining group Rio Tinto has awarded Finland’s Metso a detailed design and engineering contract for its continuous pilot plant for the BioIronTM process, according to a Metso Corp. press release.
The two companies have been working together on the development of the BioIron low-carbon ironmaking process, and proved its effectiveness in small-scale pilot tests at Metso’s Research Center in Frankfurt, Germany.
The continuous pilot plant will allow Rio Tinto to move further toward full-scale implementation of the technology. Metso has been awarded the contract for the detailed design of the pilot plant’s reduction furnace and other equipment for the BioIron process.
