Retirement Plans Prompt Board Changes for Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto announced that Rio Tinto Alcan Chief Executive Dick Evans has given notice of his intention to retire on April 20, 2009 at the conclusion of Rio Tinto’s annual general meetings. Evans also intends to step down from the Boards of Rio Tinto at that time.

The company has appointed Jacynthe Côté, currently President and Chief Executive Officer, Primary Metal, for Rio Tinto Alcan, to take over Evan’s position as Rio Tinto Alcan’s Chief Executive. Like Evans, Côté will also join Rio Tinto's executive committee.

To ensure a smooth transition, Dick Evans will transfer executive responsibilities to Côté on February 1, 2009.

Côté, who joined Alcan in 1988, brings significant operational and international experience in the aluminum industry to her new position. As President and CEO, Primary Metal, Rio Tinto Alcan, she has been responsible for all primary metal facilities and power generation installations worldwide. Previous Alcan positions include President and CEO of the Bauxite and Alumina business group, as well as senior management roles in business planning, human resources and environment, health and safety.

Côté holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Laval University in Quebec.
