Republic Engineered Products Inc. has awarded Danieli a contract to expand the company’s existing steelmaking facilities in Canton, Ohio.

The expansion project, which is being undertaken to enhance corporate steelmaking flexibility, will include installation of a new single-tank vacuum degasser station, slag rake with ladle tilter and a new 5-strand high-speed continuous caster. A new 200-ton ladle furnace with ladle cars could also be part of the upgrade.

The new continuous caster will feature the latest technological packages, such as stopper rods, hydraulic oscillators, mould EMS, air mist cooling and full process automation. The caster will be used to cast 170-mm square billets up to 250- x 190-mm rectangular blooms, at rates up to 155 tons per hour. Liquid steel will be supplied by one of the shop’s existing furnaces.

Republic has successfully operated a high-performance Danieli Cast Roll plant based on 100% direct hot-charge steelmaking and rolling process since 1995.
