Republic Steel to Temporarily Lay Off 125 at Lorain, Ohio Plant
07/22/2015 - Republic Steel is temporarily laying off about 125 workers from its Lorain plant, the company announced on 17 July.
The layoffs are due to declining conditions in the oil and gas markets and reduced demand. In March, the company announced plans to temporarily lay off 200 employees at the Lorain plant. It is not clear if these 125 workers are in addition to the 200 reported in March, or if this is a more scaled-back number of employees. No one from the company was available for comment or to clarify Friday afternoon.
"We hope that the market turns around and we can resume hot-end operations in Lorain in the future," president and CEO James Vigil said in a written statement Friday.
About 250 employees will continue to be employed at the Lorain facility, in addition to 1,100 other employees at locations in Canton, Massillon, Solon, Gary, Ind., Lackawanna, N.Y. and Hamilton, Ontario.
