Republic Steel Orders EAF and Process Equipment from SMS Concast

SMS Concast of Switzerland received an order to deliver a 150-ton electric arc furnace and process equipment from Republic Steel of Cleveland, Ohio. The EAF will be installed in the company’s Lorain, Ohio, plant.
“This expansion will help us maintain our position as the industry leader in the manufacturing of SBQ. The additional capacity from the new furnace will allow us more flexibility and efficiency in delivering the highly engineered products our customers require,” says Republic Steel President and CEO Jaime Vigil.
The new EAF will increase the company’s annual liquid steel production by 1.2 million tons. It has a 150-ton heating volume, a 120/135-MVA furnace transformer as well as eccentric bottom tapping and oxy-fuel burners.
The new furnace will feed Republic Steel’s bloom and billet casters for the production of 7.5- to 165-mm diameter SBQ flat steel and bar coil, and 152-, 280-, 305- and 355-mm diameter seamless tube rounds.
Republic Steel will tap the first furnace heat in the second quarter of 2013.
