Report: HYBRIT Solves ‘Root Cause of Carbon Dioxide Emissions From Steelmaking’

HYBRIT (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) launched in 2016 and is a joint venture of SSAB, LKAB and Swedish power company Vattenfall.

The plant last year made its first commercial delivery, according to the Tribune-Review.

The HYBRIT process replaces coking coal with hydrogen and renewable electricity.

“We get iron, and then we get water vapor instead,” said SSAB’s chief technology officer Martin Pei. “Water vapor can be condensed, recirculated, reused in the process.

“We really solve the root cause of carbon dioxide emissions from steel making,” he said.

The European Union is attempting to cut CO2 emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels. To answer the call, Sweden’s steel industry plans to achieve fossil-free operations by 2045.
