Report: Follansbee Coke Plant to Close
02/15/2022 - In line with its corporate strategy to reduce its carbon footprint across its operations, Cleveland-Cliffs announced last week it is closing its Mountain State Carbon plant in Follansbee, W.Va., USA.
The plant will close in the second quarter, the company announced during its quarterly investors conference call last week.
A company representative told MetroNews, “We continue to reduce the usage of coke by increasing the use of hot briquetted iron production and increased use of scrap in our steelmaking. This has dramatically lowered our needs for coke and coal.”
The company previously reported its goal of achieving a 25% reduction in emissions by 2030.
Cliffs said it anticipates offering jobs to affected plant workers at its other facilities.
