Regulators Approve Expansion of Indian Mill

In an announcement Thursday, the steelmaker said the plan is to take the plant’s capacity from 9 million metric tons annually to 15 million metric tons, in keeping with its own growth plans and India’s national steel policy. India aims to double its domestic capacity to 300 million metric tons by 2030.

“We want to grow with India, and for India,” AM/NS chairman Aditya Mittal said in a statement.

“Since entering the market in 2019 we have significantly improved performance at our Hazira plant and set out a clear vision to play a leading role in the decarbonization and development of the Indian steel industry. We are committed to continual improvement in our environmental performance and to producing the high-quality, sustainable steel India needs to fulfill its economic ambitions.”

AM/NS is a joint venture of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corp.

The environmental clearance was approved by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. The approval follows a detailed environmental impact assessment stipulated by the ministry, the company said.
