Rebuilt Converter Resumes Production at POSCO Mill
04/11/2017 - POSCO has restarted a LD (BOF) converter at its Gwangyang plant following a project to modernize the approximately 30-year-old unit.
POSCO largely handled the modernization project, but Primetals Technologies installed a new tilting drive on the No. 1 converter, housed in the plant’s No. 1 steel shop. Primetals said.
The company said the tilting drive is designed for a long service life and ease of maintenance.
“Emergency drives ensure almost 100% availability. For critical states, such as power failure or peak loads, a special safety concept was implemented that maximizes personal and operational safety,” the company said in a statement.
The rebuilt converter was put back into service earlier this year. Primetals said its part of the project was completed with five days to spare before the contractual deadline.
