Rebuilt Caster at Spanish Mill Gets Up to Speed
03/21/2017 - ArcelorMittal Asturias has put a rebuilt slab caster at its Aviles plant in Spain back into service and is ramping up production, according to the equipment supplier on the project.
According to SMS group, the No. 1 caster is five weeks into the restart and is producing at the same levels as before the unit was shut down for the project.
Through the project, the two-strand bow caster was rebuilt as a vertical bending caster. It also was outfitted with a remotely adjustable mold, hydraulic oscillation and a width-dependent spray cooling system in the machine head.
The caster is now capable of producing slabs in thicknesses of up to 235 millimeters and in widths of between 800 and 1,600 mm. The maximum casting speed is 1.9 m/minute.
The integrated plant produces automotive steel, tinplate and heavy plate.
