Rainfall Hampers Start of Work on New Mill
05/17/2016 - Construction on Commercial Metals Company’s new micro-mill in Oklahoma is off to a soggy start.
Southern Oklahoma has had a drenching spring, with nearly 9 inches of rainfall recorded in the past 30 days, and more than 14 inches in the last 60 days.
And that has made the start of construction a challenge, said Tracy Porter, president of Commercial Metals Company’s Americas division. However, Porter, speaking on the sidelines of AISTech 2016, said the company still expects to commission the new mill in the fall of 2017.
The mill, which is being built by Danieli, uses a “continuous-continuous” process that melts, casts and rolls steel from in a single, uninterrupted strand. Compared to the typical mini-mill, the micro-mill will have higher yields and lower energy consumption, the company has said.
It broke ground on the project last month.
