Quaker Chemical Adds New Product for Chromate Free Passivation

Amongst its product offerings, Quaker provides corrosion protection and lubrication properties with the PRIMECOAT™ surface treatment range. The portfolio includes passivation and thin organic coating products in a chromium, chromate-free, and chrome-free versions.

Quaker spotlights PRIMECOAT™ Z 838-4, a water based passivation product without chromate and fluoride. Its trivalent chrome based composition protects against corrosion on metal surfaces especially on zinc or zinc alloy steel strip. This can be achieved by using a chemcoater or spray/squeeze equipment to apply a transparent layer on the strip to provide improved formability and excellent corrosion protection, especially at higher layer weights. Another benefit is the excellent lubrication that reduces galling in deep drawing operations.

Testing shows that with 2.0–4.0mg chrome/ft2, the typical corrosion data obtained for standard hot dip galvanized surfaces are less than 5% white rust at 96 hours with Neutral Salt Spray Testing (ASTM B 117) and at greater than 1000 hours with the Constant Climate Humidity test (AST D2247). The coating appearance is transparent and slightly prismatic.

The product concentration range is around 35% using an ambient operating temperature range. The recommended peak metal temperature range is 150–180°F.

PRIMECOAT™ Z 838-4 represents one of the many surface treatment products from Quaker. Additionally, complementary process fluid products can be integrated throughout the entire steel making process.
