Qatar Steel Signs Slag Sale and Recycling Agreement
02/09/2012 - Qatar Steel has signed a slag sale and recycling contract with Slag Aggregate Producer that will enable better reuse and reinvestment while helping to consolidate and strengthen the co-operation ties between Qatar Steel and the private sector.
In support of its dedication to protecting the environment and recycling industrial wastes from the manufacture of steel, Qatar Steel has signed a slag sale and recycling contract with Slag Aggregate Producer (S.A.P), located in Doha. The company said the contract will enable better reuse and reinvestment while helping to consolidate and strengthen the co-operation ties between Qatar Steel and the private sector.
Under the new contract, Qatar Steel will sell one million tonnes of slag to SAP as steel wastes. SAP will process, recover the scrap and return it to Qatar Steel for re-use. The ensuing aggregate will be utilized in the construction and infrastructure works. SAP will process about 100,000 tonne of slag a month.
The sale contract was signed by Mr. Ali Bin Hassan Al-Murakhi, Director and General Manager of Qatar Steel, and Sheikh Khaled Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Managing Director of SAP. High officials of both sides attended the signing ceremony.
Al-Murakhi expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to cooperate with SAP, saying the recycling and processing of slag has many environment advantages, such as minimizing solid wastes generated during the production of steel. Recycling also offers economic advantages such as reducing the cost of safe disposal, in addition to minimizing the spaces occupied by slag, resulting in better space management at the plant.
Sheikh Khaledwas also endorsed the agreement, noting that it would be beneficial for the environment, through processing and recycling the industrial solid wastes including slag while also fulfilling the interests of both sides. He added that this project aims at processing slag to produce aggregates that can be used as raw materials in different construction applications and uses. Such a method is used in Europe, America, some Arab countries and GCC states as well.
Qatar Steel now owns a steel plant in Jabal Ali in the UAE, that produces reinforcement bars and wire rod. It has also some investments in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and looks forward to having more investments in other countries in the future.
