Proposed 10M-Ton Mill Wins Environmental Approval
06/27/2016 - The Indian government has given environmental clearances to an integrated steel plant that JSW Steel is proposing to build in the state of Jharkhand.
According to The (India) Economic Times, the facility will be capable of producing 10 million metric tons annually and have a 900-megawatt captive power plant.
The Times said the project is in line with India’s goal of increasing its steel output to 110 million metric tons by 2020. Whether the project comes to fruition remains to be seen, however.
The project has been on the drawing board since 2005, and imports from China have impacted its feasibility, The Times reported earlier.
“Jharkhand is a long-term plan for JSW Steel. We are waiting for the right time. At present, there's overcapacity in the steel industry and China is dumping steel into India," Jayant Acharya, JSW’s director for commercial & marketing, told the newspaper in February.
