Primetals Technologies Wins Contract for SBQ Mill Upgrades
09/27/2018 - Gerdau Special Steel North America has chosen Primetals Technologies to modernize the electric arc furnace at the steelmaker’s plant in Monroe, Mich., USA, and install a new twin-ladle furnace there.
In a statement, Primetals said the project aims to lift the plant’s capacity by 160,000 metric tons.
“End-to-end automation and the use of LiquiRob robot systems will increase productivity and reliability, optimize workflows in the steel works, and reduce operating costs. At the same time, robot systems will make work safer,” the company said.
Gerdau announced the investment earlier this year, saying the work would round out a series of investments in the special bar quality plant over the past several years.
Primetals Technologies will provide the engineering, process equipment for the electric arc furnace, and the automation and electrical packages, which include transformers. It also will oversee construction and commissioning.
The ladle furnace, along with a new material handling system, are scheduled to be put into service at the end of 2019, and the furnace upgrades are to be completed by mid-2020.
