Primetals Technologies to Upgrade ArcelorMittal Strip Mill
03/12/2025 - ArcelorMittal has contracted Primetals Technologies for a comprehensive automation upgrade at its compact strip production plant in Sestao, Spain.
According to Primetals Technologies, the project will include the installation of new level 1 and level 2 systems, several new sensors, and auxiliary drive components. Primetals Technologies will also provide start-up services.
The project goal is to increase yields and improve product quality. To that end, the new control systems will reduce downtime and enhance mill availability, Primetals Technologies said.
“Additionally, the process optimization system enables more accurate calculations for the production process, minimizing production disruptions and further optimizing yield,” the company said.
As part of the project, ArcelorMittal also will deploy Primetals Technologies’ Contour and Flatness Optimizer, a solution that handles a wide range of tasks, including contour and flatness calculations and control of shape.
Primetals Technologies said the project is in response to rising demand for ArcelorMittal’s XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel. ArcelorMittal Sestao is ramping up production to an 800,000-ton run-rate this year while working on securing long-term agreements for decarbonized steel with its customers.
XCarb is an umbrella brand that groups together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced-, low-, and zero-carbon steels.
