Primetals Technologies to Equip Tosyali Plant With Second EAF
04/08/2021 - Turkish steel producer Tosyali Demir Celik Sanayi A.S. has placed a follow-on order with Primetals Technologies for a new electric arc furnace and has asked for additional capacity on a recently ordered continuous caster, the equipment manufacturer has announced.
Primetals Technologies said the new furnace is the second one it will deliver to the steelmaker as part of a greenfield project in Iskenderun, Turkey. The slab caster also is a part of that project.
According to Primetals Technologies, the EAF Quantum furnace will be capable of producing 2 million metric tons of annual liquid steel capacity.
The OEM’s Quantum furnaces combine shaft furnace technology with a special scrap charging process, a pre-heating system, a new tilting concept for the lower shell, and an optimized tapping system.
“This all adds up to very short melting cycles,” Primetals Technologies said. “The electricity consumption also is considerably lower than that of a conventional electric arc furnace. Together with the lower consumption of electrodes and oxygen, this gives an overall advantage in the specific conversion cost of around 20%,” it said.
As for the 2-strand slab caster, Tosyali is increasing the capacity specification, asking that it be capable of producing 3.4 million metric tons annually. The company previously specified 2 million metric tons.
Primetals Technologies said it will add segments to the machine to meet the new specification.
The caster has a machine radius of 10 m and will produce slabs in widths from 900 mm to 1,800 mm and in thicknesses of 225 mm.
Start-up of the new facility is set for next year.
