Primetals Technologies to Equip Spanish Startup Mill

Hydnum Steel is proposing a complete electric arc furnace (EAF)-based mill, with a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant and cold rolling complex to be built in later stages. It will make green sheet for a number of markets, including automotive.

Primetals Technologies said its initial hot-rolled coil capacity is pegged at 1.5 million metric tons, growing to 2.6 million metric tons of hot- and cold-rolled coils by 2030.

“The facility will be designed from the ground up to use non-fossil energy throughout the manufacturing process; thus, it will use green hydrogen into the production process with the aim of substantially reducing CO2 emissions,” said Hydnum Steel chief technical officer Eric Vitse.

Russula, ABEI Energy and Siemens are also collaborators on the project.

“We are very glad to announce the plans for this massively important green steel project,” said Andreas Viehböck, Primetals Technologies’ head of upstream technologies.

“Our mini-mill concept features highly efficient electric steelmaking technology and the Arvedi ESP line for unmatched energy efficiency. These solutions ensure that Hydnum Steel has the right technology to produce steel with significantly reduced carbon emissions compared with a conventional integrated steel plant,” he said.
