Primetals said that under a contract with Union Iron & Steel Co. LLC, it will retrofit the mill with its ERT-EBROS technology, which allows for continuous rolling by welding billets upon exiting the reheat furnace. It will be the first system of its kind in the Middle East, Primetals said. 

The system will be designed for an annual production capacity of 420,000 metric tons, and will be capable of handling 130 mm and 150 mm square billets. 

The system includes a deburring station, extraction system and related equipment, such as pinch roll and roller table. Primetals also will supply the hydraulics, electrical equipment and an automation package. 

Primetals will oversee engineering, installation and commissioning. The system is to come on-line late this year.
