Primetals Technologies Modernizes voestalpine Basic Oxygen Furnace

According to a press release, the new converter, with a 67-metric-ton tapping weight, replaced the previous one which had reached the end of its lifespan. The Donawitz site is estimated to produce about 1.65 million metric tons of raw steel annually, where it is processed into billets or pre-blocks. The products are then sent to other companies for further processing.

Primetals Technologies said it provided engineering and supplied key components including the converter, trunnion ring, suspension system, slag shield, bottom stirring system and air cooling systems. They also offered advisory services for construction and implementation.

The company estimates the air cooling system will reduce the operating temperature of the trunnion ring and converter shell, resulting in the equipment lasting longer and lowering maintenance requirements. It also features the Vaicon Link 2.0, a suspension system which requires no maintenance and ensures stability while allowing for thermal expansion in all directions.

The companies have a decades-long relationship and many collaborations. Some others include a bloom caster at the Donawitz site in 2020 and an electric arc furnace at the Linz site in 2024.
