Primetals Technologies Finishes Upgrades to Georgia Caster
03/29/2018 - Gerdau’s sections mill in Cartersville, Ga., USA, has completed modifications to its 4-strand caster and has put the machine back into service, according to the equipment supplier on the project.
In a statement, Primetals Technologies said the upgraded caster now can produce an additional and larger beam blank, increasing the plant’s utilization and productivity.
Primetals Technologies was responsible for the basic and detail engineering and supplied the new molds, segments, dummy bar systems and the withdrawal unit. It also installed a new secondary cooling system needed for production of the larger beam blanks.
Primetals Technologies originally built and installed the caster in the late 1990s. The caster runs low- and medium-carbon steels and has a capacity of about 692,000 tons annually.
