In a statement, Primetals Technologies said it replaced the level 1 and 2 systems on a billet caster and the level 2 systems on the Nos. 1 and 2 blast furnaces. At the billet caster, the project yielded quality improvements, reduced maintenance requirements and lowered costs. Meanwhile, the new blast furnace systems reduced fuel and reducing agent requirements while improving hot metal quality. 

In addition to the improvements, Gerdau contracted Primetals Technologies to assess two of their facilities within an Industry 4.0 study and to provide a road map for moving toward a digital steel plant.

 Primetals Technologies said the upgrades and the study will help Gerdau meet its goal of becoming a smart steel producer and will lead to further improvements at the plant.
