Primetals Technologies, Tata Steel Europe Commission Automation System – From Afar
09/19/2019 - Primetals Technologies and Tata Steel Europe reached a first in their 50-year relationship – Primetals Technologies remotely commissioned a new level 2 automation system for a caster.
According to Primetals Technologies, the commissioning work on the system, which supports the No. 21 caster at Tata Steel’s plant in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, was carried out earlier this year over 140 heats that produced 1,900 slabs.
“The experts from Primetals Technologies were continuously connected on-line to the team from Tata Steel Europe in IJmuiden and their system throughout all the hot runs, and they supported the operator at the plant in real time – a premiere for both companies,” Primetals Technologies said.
“This successful commissioning was based on defining all relevant interfaces in detail in advance, and the intensive preparations of the experts of both companies, which was characterized by mutual trust and the highly complementary technical and metallurgical know-how of both sides.”
In addition, Primetals Technologies is constructing another continuous caster, designated as the No. 23 caster, at the IJmuiden plant. It will also be equipped with the same level 2 system.
