Potential Customers Express Interest in Product from New MMK Plate Mill

Representatives of OJSC MMK recently met in Saint Petersburg with specialists and potential customers during an event sponsored by FSUE Central Research Institute of Structural Material “Prometey”. In the course of the meeting, participants considered such questions as the manufacturability of ship steels on MMK’s new Plate Mill; shared perspectives on industry developments; discussed the requirements for ship steel material, including product quality; and explored perspectives on joint cooperation.

The meeting preceded OJSC MMK’s planned launch of its No. 9 Rolling Shop’s 5-meter Thick Plate Mill, which is scheduled to start up in July 2009. The company said the new plate mill is designed to help it satisfy demand from the pipe industry and also demand from the ship, bridge and heavy machine building sectors.

Companies from the shipbuilding industry showed a keen interest during the recent meeting in products from MMK’s 5-meter Plate Mill. Potential customers expressed an interest in procuring steel plates from the new mill, which the company said will be capable of meeting both the current and potential future requirements of shipbuilders.

Representatives of MMK’s technical and commercial services also met in mid-June with specialists from the Central Research Institute of Structural Material “Prometey”. As a result of the meetings, OJSC MMK signed a contract with departments of FSUE Central Research Institute of Structural Material “Prometey” for research and technology work. The work is intended to facilitate the development of technologies for the production of common and advanced strength thick steel plates for shipbuilding, off-shore structures and transfer pipelines.

MMK has been interacting with consumers from its major sectors through such events for some time now.
