POSCO Trades the Safety Goggles for Electronic Goggles Through Virtual Tours
09/27/2016 - Using some emerging technology, POSCO is giving its customers a chance to see its steel plants without having to travel to them.
The company said it’s now offering tours of its operations through virtual reality headsets, giving customers, and the broader public, a peek at places that had been off-limits due to safety concerns.
To enable the virtual tours, POSCO said it filmed the entirety of the steelmaking process, from the loading and unloading of raw materials to the shipping off finished products, in 360 degrees of view. It even employed drones and overhead cranes during filming to ensure that the operations were fully visualized.
“POSCO also paid a great deal of attention to details that are likely to be overlooked, such as the elaborate sounds of the machines. By wearing a (head-mounted display) and (looking) right and left, outsiders can now conveniently look around the ironmaking and steelmaking factories that had been off-limits due to safety issues.”
The company said the virtual tours will be used as part of its marketing and publicity efforts and during exhibitions.
