Posco to Build Non-Oriented Electrical Steel Sheet Factory in India

Posco announced plans to establish a 300,000 tonnes per year non-oriented electrical steel sheet factory in India.

The company’s board of directors made the decision to build the facility during a recent meeting. It will be constructed within the Vile Bhagad industrial complex near India`s Mumbai.

Materials for the new non-oriented electrical steel sheet factory will come from Posco’s cold-rolled factory that is to be constructed within the same factory site, reducing logistics costs and maximizing cost competitiveness from the start.

With India`s new non-oriented electrical steel sheet factory establishment, Posco can take lead and strengthen market control in India`s non-oriented electrical steel sheet industry. This industry previously has relied on imports for more than half of its demand.

Non-oriented electrical steel sheet has uniform magnetic properties in all directions and is used for metal pins in rotary machines such as motors. Posco foresees increasing demand for this product in India, as the country’s economy is entering a high growth period, with rapid growth anticipated for industries utilizing electrical steel sheets such as home appliances, power, automobile, and wind power plants.

Construction of the new non-oriented electrical steel sheet factory will start construction in 2011 with completion planned for August 2013.

Posco has also decided to establish a high quality oriental electrical steel sheet factory in response to India’s rapidly increasing electricity demand.
