Posco was recently named Supplier of the Year by Shanghai General Motors for 2009. Posco formed a partnership with Shanghai GM in 2007 and has since ensured the timely supply of some hard-to-produce items including EG products.
Recently, the steelmaker actively joined the automaker’s integrated purchase policy to supply high-quality auto parts on a stable basis, which helped Shanghai GM become the No. 1 automaker in China.
Posco also opened car steel plate processing centers near Shanghai, Yantai, and Shenyang—major Chinese production bases for the U.S. carmaker—in an effort to grow together with its partner by stabilizing the supply of raw materials and lowering costs.
”The production capacity of the Chinese auto industry has grown to 13 million units a year,” said the purchasing director of Shanghai GM. “Posco’s stable supply of raw materials contributed a lot to the growth of Shanghai GM.”
Founded in 1997, Shanghai GM started to give the award from 1998 to secure a supply of high-quality parts. Thirty-six recipients have been selected this year out of more than 1000 suppliers. Criteria used include quality, service, and price, among others.

Posco notes that itself and Shanghai-based Chinese steelmaker Baoshan Steel are the only two steelmakers among this year’s winners.
Posco also received the same award in March from the General Motors headquarters, the only steelmaker to win the award.
