POSCO Product Wins Top Government Honor
08/29/2016 - A POSCO product designed to cut noise between floors in apartment buildings has been recognized with a Jang Young Sil award, South Korea’s top honor for industrial technology.
The product, PosCozy, is a flooring system incorporating high-manganese steel, which offers four times the resistance to vibration, according to the company.
"Builders now have to pour concrete on top of the floor plate in order to reduce floor noise," a POSCO spokesman told The Korea Times in 2015. "But if they use our manganese steel floor plate, they won't have to do that anymore, which will shorten the construction period by at least five days per floor."
The product has been under development since 2014 and obtained its performance certification in November 2015.
Principal researcher Young-dong Yu said POSCO plans to apply the technology not only to floor plates, but to ceiling and wall construction. And, he said, the company is looking at other applications beyond residential construction.
“We plan to expand the application scope of this product to various industrial fields beyond the domestic and overseas construction markets, such as ships and home appliances as well.”
