POSCO Plans to Go All in on H2 Ironmaking
11/27/2023 - South Korean steel giant POSCO plans to shift entirely to hydrogen-reduced iron production by 2050, reports BusinessKorea.
According to the publication, the company is looking to fully commercialize its HyREX technology by 2030 and convert its Pohang and Gwangyang plants. The HyREX process makes direct reduced iron from sinter fines, with subsequent melting done in an electric smelting unit.
POSCO last year signed a memorandum of understanding with Primetals Technologies to develop a demonstration plant, which is to begin operating in 2027.
