Posco Opens New Processing Center in Japan

Posco recently opened its second Posco-JKPC (Japan Kyushu Processing Center) plant in Kyushu, Japan.

The new plant—the third of its type that Posco has built in Japan—has an annual processing capacity of 150,000 tonnes of automotive steel plates. The new plant is expected to offer logistics services for a maximum of 400,000 tonnes of steel products every year.

Several major Japanese automakers, including Toyota and Nissan, are based in Kyushu, as are several major parts suppliers, such as Daihatsu, and some 1.5 million vehicles are produced annually in the region. This is also the region Posco initially began to operate a processing center in Japan, later founding POSMETAL, a predecessor of Posco-JKPC (1994).

Posco signed a contract in January to provide steel for Toyota's main plant in Japan, and is expected to accelerate its growth as a major supplier for Japanese carmakers through the new plant located in the ‘car island.’

Posco’s previous facilities in Japan are located in Osaka and Yokohama. Last month, Posco also opened new automotive steel plate processing centers in India and Thailand, bringing the company’s total number of processing centers to 37 located in 12 countries
