Posco Named World’s Most Competitive Steelmaker

World Steel Dynamics (WSD) has named Posco as the most competitive steelmaker in the world for the second consecutive year.

WSD assessed 34 steelmakers around the world on 23 categories, including technology, profitability, cost reduction and financial health, before naming Posco as the most competitive steelmaker in the world.

U.S.-based Nucor took 2nd place, while Russia’s NLMK and Severstal were ranked 3rd and 4th places respectively. Some steelmakers that were pushed off the top-ten list last year due to stiff competition arising from new steelmakers backed with a stable supply of resources made a come-back this season; those companies include ArcelorMittal (5th), Japan-based NSC (6th) and JFE (10th).

Posco was rated highly for its growth engine through global investments and advanced technology developments such as FINEX, earning 8.12 points overall to take 1st place. Posco was the only company with over 8 points, broadening the gap with the 2nd place on the list, U.S.-based Nucor.

Posco had topped the list before, between 2002 and 2004, but other companies from India and Russia that own iron mines – including Severstal and Tata Steel – took the honor since. However, by reducing costs, improving profitability, enhancing technology, and making efforts to attain a source of iron ore, Posco once again took the top spot.
