Posco-India Opens Field Office to Support Odisha Project

Posco-India recently opened a new field office near Nuagaon village to accelerate efforts to secure the construction site for its Odisha project, which has been stalled since mid-May of 2011.

The opening of the new office, which is located within the steel mill construction site, is particularly significant in that the location was previously inaccessible due to local opposition. The company intends for it to serve as a foothold to expedite the clearing of Betelbain and forestry, as well as settle land compensation cases. Posco-India -- led by CEO Yoon Yong-won -- is also planning to accelerate work on the relocation of locals and the construction of perimeter walls, trenches, entry roads and bridges.

According to the company, the new office represents Posco-India’s determination to promote the project and to actively support and win cooperation from locals in Dhinkia and Gobindpur. It comprises nine container buildings made up of four offices, four lodging areas and a cafeteria.

The new office was jointly opened with the municipal IDCO to address the difficulties of staff, who had to travel long distances to reach the Kujang office. The Kujang office was the former base for Posco-India’s work with the municipal IDCO regarding land clearing and compensation.

Securing environmental approval in August 2007 and Supreme Court approval on land-use change in 2006, the central government reconfirmed its approval for Posco-India’s steel mill construction in January of 2011.

Obtaining final approval for land-use change in May this year, Posco-India launched efforts to clear crops and shrubs on the site, but was met with strong opposition from locals. The company projects that the steel mill will bring economic benefits to the community.
