Posco-IJPC Celebrates Innovation Achievements in Indonesia

Posco-IJPC recently hosted the 2011 Posco-IJPC Innovation Fun Festival to celebrate the past year’s innovation activities. At the beginning of the event, those present heard about detailed plans to continue the company’s innovation efforts in 2012 and resolved to support those plans.

Following the opening ceremony, festival participants viewed a video featuring their innovation activities, briefings by QSS improvement leaders on their activities and OPL (One Point Lesson) contest, participated in a talent contest and an award ceremony for those who excelled in their innovation achievements.

Wrapping up the festival, Posco-IJPC Managing Director Kwon Hyuk-jong emphasized in his speech that, “challenging ceaselessly on the basis of mutual trust and open communication with local staff members is a key factor in pursuing innovation activities in overseas locations.”

Before the company launched QSS innovation activities last year at IJPC, quality managers shared the mindset that, “living in tropical heat, Indonesians are optimistic yet negative to changes,” which made Posco hesitant to initiate the QSS program. However, the company did launch the QSS program in February 2011 under the theme of “Indonesian Biggest, Global No. 1 Processing Center.” The program signaled imminent changes in the organization, and giving Posco the platform to redefine the kind of changes it wanted to initiate with the approximately 110 local employees in order to motivate them in voluntary innovation activities.

In support of the program, quality managers took the lead and actively joined visual planning and 5S activities. Office workers were not exempted, as all of them were asked to participate in improvement works in relation to four major key performance indicators, upgrading work processes through task-based VP activities done by each work unit. As a result, the company met last year’s production/sales target of 70,000 tonnes, lowering the failure rate from 2.3 to 1.2 percent.

“Let`s not be too satisfied with the achievement,” added Kwon. “To make Posco-IJPC ‘Indonesian Biggest, Global No. 1 Processing Center,’ we should be more innovative, aggressive and cooperative with the company for its innovation activities to maximize profits”.

Posco-IJPC is working hard to select key performance indicators for each work unit to achieve their vision and goals. It plans to select a group of new improvement leaders who will play vital roles in bringing innovation to all worksites.
